Chapter 7

Late the next day’s afternoon, trumpets sang as Prince Himmasnob and Queen Tricksee arrived. Both were dressed in very expensive clothes and jewelry. The prince wore a large hat while the queen wore a pointed one inside her crown. Queen Tricksee’s stern, sharply-featured face was heavily powdered. Though they were royalty, they seemed to consider that they were better than everyone else around them. They were mean to the servants, rude to the other guests, and cold around Princess Bella’s confused parents.

“We’re very happy you and your son were willing to make such a long journey to visit us and our daughter,” the King said to Queen Tricksee.

“Yes,” she replied, holding her nose a little higher in the air. “Normally, we would not have bothered to make such a long journey twice, but our people are in need of a happy occasion.”

“Oh, why are they unhappy?” Bella’s mother asked.

Queen Tricksee held up a golden mirror framed by rubies and checked her hat. As Princess Bella watched her, she could not help but think the mirror looked familiar.

“It hasn’t rained in our lands for many months. People blame it on a witch living somewhere in the kingdom …,” Prince Himmasnob began before his mother stopped him.

“A simple lack of rain, nothing more,” she sternly stated. “Still the people need good news, and I’m sure a marriage between the princess and my son will cheer them.”

For his part, Prince Himmasonb appeared to be less than thrilled by the thought, for he knew Princess Bella’s terrible secret. Besides, the prince had another dream that interested him more than being a knight or a prince, but he couldn’t follow it because he was royal. He had to do what his mother and father commanded.

“Yes,” he sighed, “I will marry the Ice Princess and become a king if that is what is best for my kingdom.”

“She’s not an Ice Princess,” a familiar voice quietly stated from a nearby hallway.

“And who asked you … DRAGON!”

The prince yelled in alarm as he looked up and tried unsuccessfully to get his sword out.

“What is that thing doing here?” Queen Tricksee cried as she stood up.

“Spurlock,” said the Queen, “I asked you to stay in the vault.”

“I know,” the dragon agreed in confusion.

“Is that some of our royal treasure in your hands?” the King asked. The red-scaled dragon looked down at his clawed hands in surprise.

“That’s strange. I don’t even remember picking it up or why I was coming up here,” Spurlock admited.

“I demand to know why there is a dragon in this castle, especially such a dangerous one,” Queen Tricksee said loudly.

“Do you know Spurlock, Your Majesty?” Princess Bella asked.

“What? Why, no … no, of course, I don’t,” Queen Tricksee replied.

“Then how do you know he’s dangerous?” Bella wondered.

“Spurlock's anything but dangerous. Truth be told, he’s actually been quite helpful around the castle,” Bella’s mother said before Queen Tricksee could speak. “We even get to have hot baths everyday.”

“Yes, but he’s stealing your treasure. He could take ours as well,” Queen Tricksee said as she greedily held onto her golden necklaces.
